Feeling overwhelmed by the details of purchasing new hardware and software?
The Devil Is In The Details
There are lot of little details to think about when planning the purchase of new hardware or software. These decisions can have immediate or long-term consequences. Among immediate concerns are cost of deployment, learning curve, level of disruption to productivity and compatibility with current software or systems. Long-term considerations are security, reliability, capacity, and cost of maintenance.
A $400.00 computer may seem like a better buy upfront, but the deployment costs alone can easily make a $750 computer pay for itself. Factor in the extra headaches that come along with cheaper built computers and it is certainly worth a second look.
Many popular anti-virus suites can actually cause more problems than they solve. Ironically, some antivirus software can act more like a virus than a protector. They can block safe and normal processes causing printing issues, file sharing problems, and email headaches.
Higher cost doesn't always mean a better product. Sometimes the right product is also the less expensive product.

Look Before you Leap
Many PC vendors divide their line of computers between consumer and business. Consumer computers are generally made of cheaper materials, not designed for easy part replacement, and more expensive to deploy. Cheaper parts means more problems. We have seen circuit boards catch on fire because of low quality power supplies. We have also seen many elusive issues caused by hardware that works sometimes but not others. Consumer PCs often come with what is referred to as 'bloatware'. Bloatware is software that lacks in functionality or purpose yet takes up precious system resources and slows down your computer. Bloatware takes the form of music players, toolbars, wireless connectivity software, photo viewers, driver update software, and more. Why is it there? It's an extra source of income for PC vendors. 95% of the time there is a better, less resource consuming solution available for free. Removing bloatware can be time consuming and leaving it on can hurt productivity and cause technical issues.
